Disadvantaged Students and the Pupil Premium
PUPIL PREMIUM IS FUNDING TO IMPROVE EDUCATION OUTCOMES FOR DISADVANTAGED PUPILS IN SCHOOLS IN ENGLAND.
In April 2011, the Government introduced the Pupil Premium Grant. This grant which is additional to standard funding, is seen by the government as the best way to address the national inequalities between students eligible for free school meals, or have been within the last 6 years, (PP) and Looked after Children (LAC) and other students. The grant is designed to ensure that funding to address disadvantage reaches the students who need it most.
Evidence shows that disadvantaged children generally face additional challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as other pupils. Research shows that, as a group, children who have been eligible for FSM at any point in time have consistently lower educational attainment than those who have never been eligible for FSM, so Pupil Premium funding is a method to help close the attainment gap and help to provide all students with the same educational opportunities.
Orion Eden Park is committed to enabling social mobility and this starts with our Admissions Policy. We have been awarded the Silver Fair School Admissions Award, an award for schools which have made determined and significant changes to their admissions policies to ensure that there is fair access to all pupils regardless of socio-economic background.
Our Pupil Premium strategy is informed by current educational research on the most impactful strategies to improve the outcomes of disadvantaged pupils. Our objectives are to improve teaching and learning in the classroom, address academic gaps, and improve attendance and homework habits.
High-quality teaching is at the heart of our approach, with a focus on areas in which disadvantaged pupils require the most support. This is proven to have the greatest impact on closing the disadvantage attainment gap and at the same time benefits the non-disadvantaged pupils in our school.
Some additional strategies employed include:
- Booster classes
- Behaviour and learning support
- Targeted support with reading and literacy
- Discount towards the cost of school trips, visits and events
- Provision of resources for exam preparation
