Subject Curriculum

Our subject based curriculum is designed to develop students into experts in all subject areas. In order for our students to develop this expertise, each department has sequenced the knowledge required at each stage of their development. The knowledge and skills students develop at each stage of their education is meticulously planned, building on prior knowledge and towards clear end goals that students, teachers and parents/carers understand. All subjects ensure the appropriate level of content is delivered to all students and all lessons are appropriately challenging, extending their knowledge and/or skills as well linking student learning to the four key principles that run throughout the curriculum; i) Traditional Values, ii) 21st Century Skills, iii) Equality for all, iv) Enrichment for all.

Students are assessed termly, building towards a synoptic assessment in each subject area which takes place at the end of the academic year, assessing the knowledge, skill and understanding a student has gained over the course of the year. Art and Technology Department

Vision for teaching and learning:
We are committed to developing students’ visual skills and appreciation of the world; working with their skills and interests to produce a highly personalised portfolio. This in turn increases students’ confidence and self-belief, enabling them to produce their own, highly refined art and design projects.

Year 7:
In Art we focus on Natural Forms using a wealth of creative experiences that enhance their observational drawing, painting and sculpture.

Year 8:
Art concentrates on Portraiture; for example human facial proportion and communication through portraiture.

There are four key areas that the students are assessed on; this is a scaled down version of the GCSE and A-Level criteria. These are record, develop, experiment and final piece. These assessments occur across the term.

Computer Science Department

Vision for teaching and learning:
How much do we depend on computers in our modern-day life? In an age where technology is so entwined in all we do, at Eden Park High School, we teach our students the main classical approaches and technologies in Computer Science. Lessons are both practical and theoretical and always exciting; we frequently review our schemes of work and lessons to ensure students stay engaged with fresh and relevant material related to our ever changing world.

Dance Department

Vision for teaching and learning:
The Dance Department is committed to providing all students with a range of opportunities that will develop their creativity and build their interest in the Performing Arts. It is important to us that all students enjoy their lessons and are able to learn to express themselves. We strive to offer our students challenging and up-to-date lessons as well as plenty of performance opportunities in front of live audiences.

Year 7:
Dance around the world; Charleston, African, Egyptian, Disco, Bollywood, Rock n Roll.

Year 8:
Dance inspirations; Chris Brown, Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson, Twist and Pulse, Diversity.

Choreographic assessment, performance assessment, dance appreciation assessment across the term.

Extra curricular:
We encourage our students to participate in Dance during their lunch times and after school and we offer numerous clubs throughout the academic year to help them to rehearse. A boys club and a girls club are run; entered in the Bromley schools games. There are four performances a year that the students work towards. There are also links with other schools in the borough and workshop opportunities.

Drama Department

Vision for teaching and learning:
The Ravensbourne School’s Drama department is passionate and committed to providing all students with a range of opportunities that will develop their creativity and build their interest in theatre and acting.

Year 7:
Greek Theatre with physical story-telling, The Tempest, Goodnight Mr Tom, Oliver Twist.

Year 8:
Silent Movie, Macbeth, Commedia Dell’Arte, Interpreting Text; The Stones using forum theatre and improvisation.

Extra curricular:
As well as their lessons students also have the opportunity to participate in a range of clubs run by specialist staff and high achieving older students. There is a Year 7 and 8 combined club where they devise material and perform extracts of text for various showings, such as the Christmas Concert and end of year show.

English Department

Vision for teaching and learning:
The need to read competently, communicate and imagine are necessary for other subject areas, as well as essential life skills and the English Department aims to develop and refine these skills. Enthusiastic, dedicated and inspirational teachers encourage our students to develop a life-long love of language and literature, while also supporting the individual needs of learners in helping them maximise their academic progress and social potential. The English Curriculum aims to inspire and encourage students to become more confident communicators, as well as preparing them for the varied challenges of Key Stage 4. The Department’s Key Stage 3 curriculum, therefore, aims to develop comprehension and analytical skills, increase accuracy and fluency in written work, and enhance speaking and listening capabilities.

Each Unit of work has an assessment attached which tests different skills. The skills tested are the same as the skills tested at GCSE.

Farm Department

At EPHS we pride ourselves on our innovative and progressive approach to education. Through our continuing development of how students are educated, the School has created the Ravensbourne Environmental Learning Centre, (or RELC). RELC consists of 4 learning zones within the School, comprising a Farm, Allotment & Orchard, Woodland and Wildlife Pond. At the centre of the RELC is the Cottage, complete with a dedicated Farm-Classroom, which is the central hub of how RELC operates within the School.

The Farm
The Farm is located in the heart of the school and is home to a pair of pigs, goats, sheep, 9 free- range egg-laying chickens and 2 flocks of egg-laying ducks. We also have a pair of guinea pigs who enjoy their own private patch of grass.

Reptile House & Small Mammals
Our Reptile House is home to a range of more unusual specimens, such as a bearded dragon, a hedgehog, snakes, family of terrapins, and the tortoises. Within the classroom are the smaller mammals such as gerbils, rats, and a chinchilla. The Farm Classroom facilities also offers the chance for students to complete qualifications in animal care & horticulture, comprising theory sessions indoors and application of practical work outside.

The Allotment & Orchard
The allotment & teaching greenhouse allows students to learn how to sow and grow a range of fruit and vegetables.

The woodland nature trail offers students of all ages the chance to take their learning outdoors, either by developing learning skills through building dens, or growing awareness of their surroundings by using the natural resources.

RELC within Curriculum
It is essential that RELC is integrated into the School’s curriculum – therefore, this year, every department in the school, across all key stages, has taught lessons using all the areas of RELC, and will continue to cultivate new innovative ways of students becoming more aware of their environment, connecting with the growing process, and enjoying learning in safe and peaceful surroundings.

Geography Department

Vision for teaching and learning:
We aim to provide innovative, engaging teaching to inspire students so that they achieve great things and, importantly, love their learning in Geography. We ensure that every student will be proud of their work as they will work to the highest standards at all times to ensure that their progress exceeds their potential.

Year 7:
People and the biosphere, UK’s evolving physical landscape, challenges of an urban world.

Year 8:
Development, Field Work, UK’s evolving human landscape.

At the end of each unit there is an exam. Throughout the course there is also a GCSE style 8 mark question in each lesson.

Fieldwork trips take place in and around the local area and further afield, including Bromley Town Centre and Kew Gardens. International trips to explore Geographical landscapes around the world are planned every couple of years and are planned from KS3. Recent trips have been to Iceland (2012), Sicily (2013), Switzerland (2015) and Italy (2018). Geography club is run every Thursday lunchtime.

Vision for teaching and learning:
We aim to make History accessible to all by making students conscious of how the modern world was made. We focus on elements of local, national and world history and integrate citizenship, maths and science into our lessons. History continues to prove to be a popular subject with our students and students progress extremely well.

Year 7:
Ruling Britain 1066 to the Modern Day: A study of law and order.

Year 8:
International Relations 1900 – 1939 and the turning points of World War 2 and The Cold War.

Three assessments per year; 70 minutes each, modelled on GCSE style papers to prepare the students, based on topics covered in lessons.

Debate Club, Enrichment Trips (Ypres, Belgium, London Museums)

Library Department

Whilst the students of Eden Park High School are at their temporary home of The Ravensbourne School they will have access to two Libraries. The Discovery Library is for KS3 students and the War Memorial Library is for KS4 and KS5 students. The Libraries exist to support the effective learning of all students by providing opportunities for active and reflective skill development, and promotion of a reading culture across the school.

The School Libraries support the aims of EPHS.

The Objectives of the School Libraries are:

  • To provide a central resource for the whole school curriculum and ethos
  • To be an integral part of the teaching and learning styles and activities of the school
  • To focus on development of information gathering, problem solving, learning and thinking skills throughout the school
  • To provide opportunities for the individual to read more widely and think more deeply
  • To provide opportunities for leisure and recreational reading.

The Libraries stock a range of fiction and non-fiction, reference books, DVDs, magazines and an extensive ‘Information File’ containing leaflets, newspaper cuttings and free literature from various sources, Guided Independent Study materials for Post 16 students, and a dedicated Careers Library.

Maths Department

Mathematics is such an essential part of life that we all use it every day without even thinking about it. Every time we organise a trip, go shopping or make a decision about how to use our precious time or money we use mathematics. Most business decisions, research analysis, marketing strategies, government planning, product development, etc. are underpinned by mathematics.

At Eden Park High School we encourage all our students to develop an appreciation for mathematics. Our lessons aim to channel the students’ innate curiosity into mathematical inquiries from which they are able to discover various “rules” for themselves. This approach enhances students’ engagement and enjoyment of their lessons. It also nurtures a confidence in their own abilities which is a key component of success in mathematics.

Year 7:
Students study algebra, number, data, geometry and ratio / proportion.

Year 8:
As above; with more depth and challenge.

Across Years 7 and 8 Maths offers three pathways; Pi, Theta or Delta. No matter their pathway, they will still cover the same curriculum.

Extra-Curricular activities:
We take pride in the development of our students, holding weekly chess clubs, KS3 Maths Stretch and Challenge Club – related to extended activities, puzzles and problem-solving. We prepare for, and sit, the UK Mathematics’ Trust Challenges, with an increasing number of our students gaining, gold, silver and bronze awards. Regular STEM events occur in school where students are taken off timetable in order to participate. Teachers within the Department are always willing to make themselves available before, during and after the school day in order to support students to improve their progress.

Modern Foreign Languages Department

Vision for teaching and learning:
We offer two languages at EPHS; at present, all students follow one language from year 7 to year 9 and they can then choose this as a GCSE and AS/A Level option. This is getting more popular by the year as more and more top universities are asking students to have a GCSE in Languages to apply for their courses. Being able to speak another language means that students are more employable, more flexible and evidence shows that Languages graduates get better remunerations.

Year 7 Spanish:
Describing themselves, speaking about their free time and their house.

Year 8 Spanish:
Describing their town and region, describing their school and the food they eat, as well as holidays.

Year 7 French:
Describing themselves, speaking about their school, stating what they eat and their local area.

Year 8 French:
Describing free times and holidays and daily life issues

Three assessments per year they are modelled on GCSE style papers to prepare the students, based on topics covered in lessons. We cover all the skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) as well as the grammar and translation ones.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department has been organising trips to Spain and France for the past few years.

Music Department

Year 7
Schemes of Learning focus on singing, samba drumming, basic keyboard skills and an introduction to music sequencing software. Assessment is based on a combination of practical assessments and formal written exam at the conclusion of each rotation. Students are also introduced to basic music notation though a variety of tasks.

Year 8
Schemes of Learning focus on students organising their own performances, intermediate keyboard skills based around the blues and use of Cubase music sequencing software. Assessment is based on a combination of practical assessments and formal written exam at the conclusion of each rotation. Students are also introduced to more advanced music theory such as chords.

Year 9
Schemes of Learning focus on group and solo singing, student organizing their own performances, and exploring compositional ideas through conventional instruments and audio sequencing techniques. Assessment is based on a combination of practical assessments and formal written assessment at the conclusion of each rotation.

GCSE Music
Coursework: 60% (under controlled assessment conditions), 30% performance, 30% composition. Examination: 40%. Exam taken in May/June 2016

Philosophy, Ethics and Religion Department

Vision for teaching and learning:
RE at Eden Park high School is taught with an emphasis on the philosophical and cultural basis of the six major religions found in Britain today. However, we also study a variety of alternative and ancient faiths as well as looking at contemporary actions evolving through faith. Students are not expected to be religious, but are encouraged to learn through questioning the beliefs of those people who are.

Year 7:
What is philosophy? What is ethics? Introduction to the five major world religions.

Year 8:
Matters of life and death; value of life, Christian / Hindu / Humanist perspectives of the after-life. Arguments for and against euthanasia.

Edexcel GCSE questions are applied to the KS3 content. There are 3, 4, 5 and 15 mark questions in the papers. These are practiced throughout the year and at milestone assessment times.

Extra Curricular:
KS3 trip to Aushwitz for a three night stay; students will experience the Jewish Quarter, Schindler’s Factory, Unesco salt mines and various museums.

Physical Education Department

Vision for teaching and learning:
We aim to provide students with over three hours of physical education over a two week period. Students are taught key principles of sport and the benefits of a healthy active lifestyle. Through a wide variety of activities we aim to engage and enthuse students in physical activity and develop wider personal skills such as teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

Year 7-8:
Sports covered include football, rugby, netball, handball, badminton, tennis, basketball, rounders, athletics, softball and cricket.

Year 7:

Vision for teaching and learning:
We aim to equip students with the scientific skills and understanding necessary for their time, not only at school but also into their adult life. There is an emphasis on learning science through experimental work, using specialist science equipment. Research and problem-solving tasks encourage students to be independent enquirers and innovative thinkers as well as team workers. Students are provided with the opportunity to share their ideas by presentation in various ways and, in doing so, to reflect on their learning.

Year 7:
Particles and their behavior, Forces, Plant Reproduction, Cells and Movement, Separating Mixtures, Sound and Light, Reproduction and Variation, Energy, Chemical Reactions, Acids and Alkalis, Space, Skills in Working Scientifically, Electricity, Earth Structure, Speed and Gravity.

Year 8:
Periodic Table, Magnets and Electromagnetism, Contact Forces and Pressure, Respiration and Photosynthesis, Breathing and Digestion, Climate and Resources, Metals and Non-Metals, Wave Effects and Wave Properties.

At the end of every topic there is a test – these tests reflect the objective weightings at GCSE. Tests are between 30-45 minutes. Each year group has a milestone assessment which will cover everything learnt up until that point. GCSE foundation paper questions are used to provide accurate grading.

Faraday Challenge, New Scientist live exhibition, Science Week celebrated (including a Birds of Prey demonstration), STEM competitions; many linked to companies, Virtual Reality space walk, Otford trip to the solar system.
